Mapping Monday: Research trip to North Hero

Here's a little map of a genealogical research trip I made to North Hero, Grand Isle County, Vermont. Creating maps is fun and can help you with your genealogical research or provide a visual to display on your wall or web site. Route 2 northeast from 89's exit 17 in Colchester took me across Grand Isle, the southernmost Champlain Island, through South Hero village to North Hero Island, a sort of two-part island which is only connected by a narrow band of land at the "Carryin

Genealogical Research Institute of Pittsburgh, Summer 2017

Really looking forward to Harold Henderson's June 2017 GRIP course on writing proof arguments, "From Confusion to Conclusion." See all the details here. I love writing and good writing is essential in genealogy practice. This will be a great class! #genealogy #Vermontgenealogy #Vermontgenealogist #Vermontfamilypictures #Vermontfamilyhistory #genealogistVermont #genealogymap #familyhistorymap

    Genealogy meets hand bookbinding

Being a hand bookbinder as well as a genealogist, I recently delighted in early Grand Isle County, Vermont court docket books. These books are hand sewn, and I couldn't help wondering who made them. Unrefined and humble, they are practical containers for the court records. Was book sewing part of the court clerk's skill set? Did anyone and everyone know how to sew a book in the early 19th century? Did the local printer make them? Or were pamphlet books something that a genera
